FIELD GUIDE TO ONE MORE CHAPTER DRIFT

Subject: Nocturnal Reading Extension Behavior Coverage: Stages One through Four, with Terminal Phase Recommended For: Anyone whose night has contained at least three final chapters

Stage One: The Original Final Chapter

The reader identifies a stopping point. The stopping point is the end of the current chapter. This is a reasonable stopping point. It is acknowledged as such. The chapter ends.

The final chapter has ended. Sleep is now available.

Stage Two: The Renewal

The next chapter begins on the same page. It begins with a sentence that reframes the previous chapter's ending as provisional. The reader reads one sentence. Then another.

The governing rule: after bedtime, one more chapter drift may continue until trying to sleep becomes the more disruptive activity.

The final chapter is a renewable resource.

Stage Three: The Accumulated Chapters

Each chapter ends at a point that creates a natural continuation, which is technically the author's fault but practically the reader's problem. The reader has now been in the final chapter phase for ninety minutes. Three chapters have been final. One chapter was not counted as final because it ended on a fragment.

A check of the time produces a number that is not processed fully and is returned to later.

Stage Four: The Recalculation

The time has been checked. It is late. The number of hours remaining before an obligation has been calculated. The calculation assumes falling asleep in under five minutes, which is optimistic.

The chapter is short. The chapter will not take long.

Terminal Phase

Eventually the attempt to optimize sleep becomes the main reason sleep starts late. The next chapter is declared final.

The person whose last chapter has had three sequels does not look up from the book to register how many times the final chapter has been declared. They are reading.

The book ends on page 412. It is 1:47am. The ending was worth it. This assessment will be less available tomorrow morning.
