Field Notes on Coin Price Dinner Talk
Three scenes from a dinner at which a token price was raised and the table registered its opinion without speaking.
Scene 1
The appetizers have arrived. He checks the phone under the table, which is technically not at the table.
The price is up four percent from the morning. He knows this is not the right moment to mention it, which is a different kind of knowing from not wanting to mention it, and he is aware of the difference even as he sets the phone face-down and picks up a piece of bread.
He mentions it at the end of the sentence he was already saying, as if it is a minor addition. "So the Sharma project is basically done, and also the token is up four percent today." The sentence lands with an uneven weight. The four percent is carrying more than its grammatical position suggests.
Scene 2
The table does not respond to the four percent.
This is also information. He receives it.
The first case of coin price dinner talk changes one small decision without being discussed. He begins explaining. The explanation is longer than the update warranted. He is now accounting for the absence of response, which requires more material than the original piece of news. The table listens. The table is warm and paying attention to him, just not to the four percent, which is a distinction that is somehow worse than disinterest.
The check cannot change the price, yet it changes the person's mood as if an action occurred. He knows this. He is explaining anyway. Scene 3
Dessert. He has not checked since Scene 2.
The table has moved on to something else. Someone is telling a story about a flight they almost missed. It is a good story. He is listening. He is also aware of the phone in his pocket, which contains a number that has changed or not changed in the last forty minutes.
Eventually coin price dinner talk acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. He will raise it differently next time, more carefully, or he will not raise it at all, which is a plan he has made before and has not yet implemented because the number keeps doing something worth mentioning.
The story about the flight concludes. Everyone laughs. He laughs. He checks the phone in the car on the way home, alone.
It is up another two percent. He does not tell anyone tonight.
