Field Notes on Empty Boxes
The device came in a box. The device is out of the box. The box is in the wardrobe. The return window closed in September.
Location: Top shelf, right side wardrobe. Contents: Product packaging, two cable loops, instruction booklet (unread), quick-start guide (also unread), small bag containing screws for an accessory that was not purchased. Age: Eight months since unboxing. Return window: Thirty days. Closed seven months ago.
Observation 1: The Retention Logic
The box is kept for resale. If the device is sold, a box with original packaging increases the value and credibility of the sale. This is true. The device is not being sold. It is in use. The resale logic is accurate but not currently applicable.
The box is kept for a return that requires explanation. If the device develops a fault, the box demonstrates care. This is also true. The device is functioning normally. The return logic is also accurate but not currently applicable.
The box is kept because throwing away an empty box feels like throwing away the device's credentials. The device itself does not require these credentials. The box has them anyway.
Observation 2: The Hierarchy of Box Retention
Some boxes are kept permanently: boxes for flagship phones, laptops, watches, and other devices whose resale value is enhanced by original packaging. These boxes are given a location in the storage hierarchy.
Some boxes are discarded normally: cereal boxes, shoe boxes, delivery boxes. These are recyclable without deliberation.
Some boxes are in the third category: boxes for devices that were significant purchases but are not flagship items, boxes for accessories, boxes for things that were gifts. These boxes are placed somewhere temporary after unboxing and remain in that temporary location until the location becomes permanent by duration.
The box in the wardrobe is in the third category. It has been temporary for eight months.
Observation 3: The Future Decision
The box will be discarded when the wardrobe is reorganized, or when a decision about the device is made, or when the box becomes an obstacle rather than an ambient presence.
None of these conditions are currently met. The box remains.
