The phone has been placed face down as a formal declaration of sleep. It has been turned over twice in the last nine minutes.

23:14 Phone placed face down. This is the formal declaration. Face down means concluded. Face down means the session is over. Face down is not the same as off, but it is adjacent to off in the way that closing a book is adjacent to finishing it.
The governing rule: any action framed as the last one before sleep may renew itself once.
23:19 Phone turned over to check whether anything arrived in the five minutes since placement. Nothing has arrived. The phone is returned to face-down position.
23:23 The face-down phone is considered. The screen facing the mattress creates a small and entirely theoretical certainty that if something arrived, the notification would be muffled by fabric and therefore less legible. The phone is turned over to address this theoretical concern. Nothing has arrived.
The phone did not initiate contact. The person lifted it and turned it over to confirm the phone had not initiated contact.
23:31 Face down. Second formal declaration of sleep. More committed than the first. The person settles.
