The meeting was called to review findings from a six-month observational study of tip transmission and tip fate. The study tracked recommendations passed between friends in categories including restaurants, films, books, podcasts, articles, applications, and professionals whose services might be relevant.

Minutes of findings.

The transmission rate is high. Friends share tips frequently and with conviction. The tipper has generally derived genuine value from the thing being recommended and wishes to distribute that value to people they care about. Tip quality is real. Tip volume is also real.

The action rate is low. A tip that is not acted upon within the first twenty-four hours of receipt has a significantly reduced probability of ever being acted upon. The probability decreases further at seventy-two hours. The probability continues to decline but does not reach zero: there is a documented category of tips that are acted upon months or years after receipt, usually because a second party mentions the same recommendation and creates a coincidence effect.

The residue accumulates. A friend with an active social network has received more actionable tips in the past twelve months than could be acted upon in the next three years without any new tips arriving, which is not a condition that will obtain.

The absurd rule that governs tip transmission is that the value of a recommendation is not diminished by its low probability of uptake, and both parties understand this and continue anyway.

The contradiction is that the tip is offered as a gift and received as an obligation, and neither party intended either of those things.
