Field Notes on Goodbye Doorway Extension

Goodbye was said inside. The same goodbye is being said again in the doorway. A third version is happening on the stairs. Both people are still there.

FIELD NOTE 1: The First Goodbye

The first goodbye is the sincere one. It contains: the explicit statement of leaving, the summary of the visit, the expression of enjoyment, and the vague arrangement for a next meeting. It is complete as a goodbye.

It is also not the goodbye.

FIELD NOTE 2: The Topics After the First Goodbye

The topics that emerge after the first goodbye have a distinct character. They are not the main topics of the evening. They are the topics that surface when the pressure of the visit has been released and the mind is free to retrieve things it held back.

These topics are often the best ones.

The difficulty is that receiving a topic after someone has said goodbye creates an obligation to respond properly, which keeps both parties in the conversation that was supposed to have ended. The visit was good. Nobody wants to cut the good part short.

FIELD NOTE 3: The Doorway Phase

The doorway phase is when both parties have moved toward the exit but have not completed the crossing. The doorway creates a specific conversational state: physically near the departure point, not yet departed, topics accessible from both sides of the threshold.

The doorway phase typically contains two to four additional exchanges. Each exchange is complete. Each creates an entry point for the next.

FIELD NOTE 4: The Landing

The landing extends the visit into a space that is neither the home nor the departure. It is neutral ground with no furniture, which removes the mechanism for sitting back down. The visit must end here.

It usually ends here, after approximately one more exchange.

FIELD NOTE 5: The End

The end happens when one person physically moves in the direction of the exit and does not stop. The other person waves. The goodbye is complete.

Total goodbye duration this evening: twenty-seven minutes. Total visit before goodbye: three hours.
