Field Notes on Meal Suggestion Veto
Declared indifference about meal choice is a position that activates only after another party assumes the decision cost.
Day 1, Evening
Subject A asks Subject B what they would like for dinner. Subject B says anything is fine. Subject A suggests pasta. Subject B says they had pasta yesterday. Subject A notes this was not mentioned when the question was asked. Subject B notes that pasta yesterday is a relevant fact regardless of when it was mentioned.
Subject A suggests rice. Subject B is quiet for a moment. This is not acceptance. It is consideration, which is indistinguishable from acceptance until it is not.
Subject B says actually they were thinking something lighter. Subject A says that would have been useful information at the start. Subject B says they did say anything.
Day 4, Afternoon
Observing the pre-dinner sequence from a secondary position. Subject A now phrases the opening question differently: not "what do you want" but "I'm thinking X, does that work?" The shift has transferred the veto burden. Subject B now says yes or no to a named option rather than issuing a blank approval that contains hidden constraints.
Subject B says no to one option. Subject B says yes to the next. Dinner proceeds in eleven minutes.
The system is more efficient. Neither party has acknowledged that the system changed. Both parties adapted to it without discussion.
Day 9, Notation
Meal suggestion veto creates a small sense of control for the person who holds it. They did not choose, which means they did not bear the cost of choosing. They can reject, which means they retain authority without exposure.
The sense of control is real. It is also what the other party is managing around with the revised framing strategy. Both people can see the social rule. Naming it would feel more awkward than obeying it.
Day 14, Final
The pattern has stabilized into its permanent form. Subject A names options. Subject B evaluates them. This will continue until one party changes their living situation or their appetite for efficiency. Whichever comes first.
Familiarity may certify meal suggestion veto even when efficiency cannot. The ritual now feels more alarming to remove than the original coordination problem it encoded.
