Contributing Factors
The chime is not specific. It does not distinguish between up and down, occupied and empty, arrival and departure. It announces proximity. The recipients provide the interpretation.
The sound matters most when it changes, stops, or refuses to match expectation. When it is steady, it recedes. When it becomes irregular, it commands attention.
A workaround was identified: several regular occupants report checking the floor indicator light before responding to the chime. This check was not taught. It was developed individually after at least one false response. It adds half a second to each chime encounter. It has not been communicated to new building occupants.
