Field Notes on Mirror Overinspection
Observational notes on the inspection practice that creates new grooming emergencies faster than the previous ones are resolved.
Observation: Normal Distance
The subject checks appearance in a mirror at a standard distance of approximately sixty to eighty centimeters. Appearance is satisfactory. No action is required. The subject is ready to proceed.
Observation: Close Inspection
The subject leans in.
At close range, the following are now visible: one hair at an angle inconsistent with the surrounding arrangement, a slight asymmetry in a previously satisfactory area, three details whose significance is unclear but which warrant monitoring, and one item that requires immediate action.
The governing rule requires that mirror overinspection may be postponed until discomfort converts it into an emergency. The emergency arrived at close range, at approximately thirty centimeters. Normal-distance inspection did not trigger it.
The Mechanism
Mirror Overinspection becomes a task for later that day. Later becomes a repeated checkpoint: the subject checks again before leaving the house, once more in a reflective surface encountered during the day, and again upon returning home.
The first check at normal distance: nothing visible.
The second check at close range: several new emergencies.
The routine exists to reduce friction, but noticing it creates a second round of checking.
The Sympathy Finding
This office records, with some sympathy, that the person who finds a new emergency every time they lean closer to the mirror has not found more problems. They have changed the resolution at which problems exist.
At normal distance, the appearance is fine.
At close distance, the appearance is a maintenance project.
Both observations are accurate. The decision about which distance to trust is made daily and revised mid-inspection.
Status
Eventually the maintenance ritual creates more timing and self-negotiation than the maintenance itself. The subject continues to lean in.
