Field Notes on Moodboard Before Draft
The moodboard was completed with more care than anything it was meant to inspire.
FIELD NOTES: Moodboard Before Draft Observer: Unknown. Self-reported.
Day 1, 9:14 AM. Subject opens a new file. The file is blank. Subject navigates away from the blank file after approximately eleven seconds. Destination: image search.
Day 1, 9:41 AM. Moodboard construction has begun. Images are curated. Some are saved from other people's completed work. The subject studies the completed work and considers what it would feel like to have made something like that. The feeling is good. No draft exists.
Day 1, 11:02 AM. The governing rule is operational: any task adjacent to making may replace making while moodboard before draft still feels productive. The moodboard now has sections. The sections are titled: Color, Mood, Reference, Anti-Reference. The Anti-Reference section contains three items that the project should not look like. This required negative aesthetic judgment, which is a form of taste, which is a form of work.
Day 1, 2:20 PM. Moodboard Before Draft makes the project feel more professional. The project is a moodboard and two lines of text. Both lines are good. The moodboard does not disagree with the lines. The moodboard and the lines have not met.
Day 2, 10:05 AM. Professionalism raises the standard for what the first real attempt is allowed to look like. The first attempt must now be consistent with a fully curated visual language, seventeen saved references, and a documented color theory. The first attempt, when it happens, will be reviewed against these standards and found preliminary.
Day 2, 3:47 PM. The moodboard has stronger execution than the actual project. This is a documented observation, not a criticism. The moodboard is finished. It can be shared. It represents genuine decisions.
Day 3, 10:00 AM. The first attempt is then delayed because it now has to justify all the preparation that came before it.
Day 3, 10:13 AM. A third moodboard section is being created. Subject has titled it: Texture.
The draft has not begun.
