Notice Concerning Cache Clearing Ritual
The cache was cleared, the service recovered, and nobody asked what the cache had contained.
FORENSIC ANALYSIS: Cache Clearing Ritual Case Reference: Unexplained Service Recovery, Repeated Classification: Behavior Pattern of Interest
EVIDENCE
An unexplained failure occurred. The service was unresponsive. Logs were consulted. The logs were unhelpful. The engineer considered several diagnoses. One was a cache issue. The cache was cleared.
The service recovered.
FINDINGS
The cache clearing ritual produces a promising local signal: recovery. Recovery is the preferred outcome. Recovery was achieved. The investigation was concluded because the outcome was correct, regardless of whether the explanation was.
The governing rule was triggered: any cache clearing ritual that restores service once may be reused until someone proves why it worked.
Nobody proved why it worked.
ESCALATION
Six weeks later, a similar failure occurred in a different environment. The cache was cleared. The service recovered. The engineer who cleared the cache was not the same engineer. They had heard about the first incident.
The workaround was copied into another environment without a full explanation.
The explanation, if it had been written, would have said: we cleared the cache, the service recovered, we do not know if these events were related.
That explanation was not written because the team was busy. Recovery was the priority.
CURRENT STATUS
The cache clearing ritual is now the first step in the team's informal incident response procedure. It is not in any official runbook. It is mentioned in onboarding as "just try clearing the cache first." New engineers clear the cache.
Eventually the unexplained behavior becomes operational folklore and deleting it requires an incident review.
The cache clearing ritual has now restored service on nine separate occasions. On four of those occasions, the failure had nothing to do with the cache. Recovery occurred through unrelated mechanisms. The cache was cleared anyway because clearing the cache is the first step.
CONCLUSION
The cache clearing ritual makes the immediate symptom disappear without proving the underlying condition changed. The condition may or may not have changed. This has not been tested.
The cache was cleared this morning as a precaution.
