Field Notes on Prealarm Minute Accounting
Waking eleven minutes before the alarm converts eleven minutes into a decision requiring full executive function.
Field Notes: Prealarm Minute Accounting
Date of Observation: 6:19 AM Alarm Set For: 6:30 AM Status: Decision pending
6:19 AM
Awake. Alarm has not gone off. Eleven minutes remain.
The question arrives before full consciousness: is eleven minutes worth it?
The Case For Returning to Sleep
Eleven minutes is real sleep. Eleven minutes is a meaningful biological unit. Every minute of sleep is a resource. Resources should not be wasted. The body is warm. The pillow is at the correct temperature. This is the best it will feel all day. Return to sleep.
The Case Against
Returning to sleep in eleven minutes will produce a state of deeper sleep at exactly the moment the alarm sounds. The alarm will interrupt this state. The interruption will create grogginess that outlasts the benefit of the eleven minutes. The eleven minutes are a trap.
The Calculation
The calculation takes four minutes. Four of the eleven minutes have been consumed by the question of whether to use them. Seven remain.
Seven minutes is different. Seven minutes is borderline. The calculation restarts.
6:24 AM
Five minutes remain. The governing rule: if prealarm minute accounting promises better sleep, it may consume the sleep it was meant to protect.
Five minutes is not enough to sleep. Five minutes is not enough to get up. Five minutes is exactly long enough to lie here accounting for five minutes.
Eleven minutes is either a full sleep cycle or nothing, depending on which belief system is consulted at 6:19 AM.
6:30 AM
The alarm sounds. The person who turns eleven remaining minutes into a strategic decision did not sleep. They did not get up. They conducted a five-minute assessment of time management at a moment when their brain was not yet functioning at the level required for time management.
The alarm is snoozed for nine minutes.
The nine minutes are not debated.
