Field Notes on Scroll While Waiting
A two-minute wait produces a short video session that outlasts whatever was being waited for.
Field observation, July 9. Location: indoor, monsoon outside. Occasion: waiting for an elevator, then waiting for a download, then waiting for a page to load.
In each case, Scroll While Waiting was initiated before the wait duration was assessed. The phone was already open. The short video application was already in the recent apps tray. Thumb contact with the screen preceded any deliberate choice about whether to make it.
The first wait lasted ninety seconds. Scroll While Waiting was active for four minutes after the elevator arrived.
Scroll While Waiting extends the break by one clip. This is the basic unit of drift. One clip is not a problem. The feed removes clear boundaries between the next clips because the feed does not contain boundaries. The boundary that would end the session is not in the content. It is in the user, and the user is watching a clip.
Each clip is easy to leave while the feed removes a natural stopping point. This is the central asymmetry. Entry is frictionless. Exit requires an external event or an internal one, and in July the external events are fewer because leaving is wetter.
Under the governing rule, scroll while waiting becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. After the third elevator, the phone was already in hand before the call button was pressed. The wait anticipated the scroll. The scroll anticipated the wait.
The break becomes a session requiring a separate act of will to end, which is not the same act of will that started it. Starting took no will. Ending requires some.
