The Group

There was a group chat. The group chat was for a project that had ended, or for a trip that had happened, or for a recurring dinner that had not recurred in fourteen months. Nobody remembered which one.

The group had forty-one members. Nobody knew all forty-one members. Nobody had verified the forty-one.

The Admin

The group had an admin. The admin was identified by a small crown icon next to their name. The crown was small. Nobody had mentioned the crown. Everyone had noticed it.

The admin had never sent a message in the group. The admin had never changed the group name, the group photo, or the group description, which read "let's do this" and had been written by the admin at the time of creation as a motivating opener, before the admin sent no further messages.

Nobody knew why the admin had created the group. Everyone assumed someone else had created it, and they were all correct, because someone had.

The Incident

A member sent a message that was slightly off-topic. It was a photo. The photo was of a meal. The meal was not relevant to the group's original purpose.

Everyone waited.

The admin did not respond. The admin did not remove the photo. The admin did not issue a reminder about the group's purpose, because the group's purpose was no longer clear to anyone including the admin.

Three other members sent meal photos. This was a new era for the group.

Investigation

Someone searched for the admin's name in the group list. The admin was present. The admin had a profile photo that had not been updated since 2019. The admin's status was "Available."

Available. Watching.

The Governing Rule

The admin is not absent. The admin is watching. The admin has simply not encountered a situation that required action, which is its own kind of governance.

The group had been running for twenty-three months without incident. The admin had been correct about everything by doing nothing, which is a governance outcome most systems cannot achieve and nobody had intentionally designed.

Consequence

The meal photos continued. Someone changed the group name to "The Regulars," which is what the group had become. The admin did not weigh in on the new name. The new name persisted.

At some point the admin left the group. Nobody received a notification. The crown transferred to a second member who had also never sent a message.

The second admin is also watching.

Status

The group continues. Leadership is present and quiet. Everyone understands the arrangement.
