The Infinite Scroll Bargaining Exception

A limit has been set. The limit has a known exception. The exception is invoked every evening.

Annual Review: Infinite Scroll Bargaining Exception Performance Period: July 2021 to July 2022

Program Summary

In August 2021, the subject established a daily screen time limit of forty-five minutes across social media applications. The limit was set using the device's built-in screen time management tools. The limit was a genuine attempt at behavior modification.

The limit has been exceeded on 298 of the 335 days for which data is available.

The Exception

Approximately eleven days after establishing the limit, the subject created an exception. The exception is not documented in any system. It is an internal agreement, formalized through repetition, that reads approximately as follows: the limit applies during productive hours, and productive hours end at approximately 9:30 PM, and after 9:30 PM the scroll is acceptable because the day is over and the scroll is not preventing anything useful from occurring.

The exception is documented nowhere and invoked reliably.

Exception Variants Observed This Period

The base exception has generated several variants, each with its own internal justification:

The "one more pass" variant, invoked at the point when the limit notification appears, allowing completion of the current scroll session before closing.

The "I'll just check one thing" variant, applied at the start of a session that precedes the exception window by two to three hours.

The "this is research" variant, applied when content encountered during scrolling is tangentially related to a project the subject is working on.

The "I've had a long day" variant, which requires no quantification of what constitutes a long day and is therefore available every day.

The Governing Rule

The limit exists as a statement of values. The exception exists as a statement of what happens when values meet a phone at 10:15 PM. Both are accurate descriptions of the subject's relationship to this behavior.

Removing the limit would be worse. The limit functions as a small cost imposed at the point of override: the subject must tap through a notification, confirm an extension, and briefly acknowledge that the limit exists. This takes six seconds. The six seconds are the intervention.

Performance Assessment

The limit was exceeded 298 times. The limit prevented approximately 38 sessions from extending beyond their intended duration. The 38 sessions constitute meaningful friction.

37 of the 38 sessions resumed within four minutes.

Recommendation

The limit remains in place for the next review period. The exception remains in place. This is not a failure of the program. This is the program.

Status

Review complete. Parameters unchanged. The phone is within reach.
