Finding on Profit Story Preservation

Someone keeps telling the story of one early win while no longer discussing the total portfolio.

Field notes, May 2022. Subject observed across multiple conversations in two cities.

The Story

The story goes like this: in November 2020, the subject purchased a small position in a coin that was not yet widely discussed. The coin increased by four hundred percent over the following six weeks. The subject sold at or near the top. This is the story.

The story is true. It happened. The proceeds were real.

The story has been told approximately thirty-one times since November 2020, according to the subject's own estimate, which the subject offered without being asked.

The Portfolio

The portfolio also contains other positions. These positions have, since early 2022, produced outcomes that are less narratively useful than the November 2020 story. The current aggregate value of the portfolio is not a number the subject volunteers.

These two facts coexist without contradiction in the subject's accounting system.

Field Observation One

The first case of profit story preservation changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject decides to answer "I did well in crypto" when asked, rather than "I did well in one trade and have since experienced the median outcome of a 2021 retail investor." The shorter answer is accurate. It omits context. Context is not required.

Field Observation Two

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around profit story preservation. A colleague who heard the November story twice no longer asks about the portfolio, which means the subject no longer has to route around the current numbers in real time. The question has been retired. The silence is mutually maintained.

Field Observation Three

Eventually profit story preservation acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The subject's self-assessment of investment acumen is grounded in the November 2020 trade. The 2022 portfolio is treated as a separate category: not bad luck, not bad decisions, but simply a different phase, which will eventually produce its own story.

The story may not come. The holding continues.

The Governing Mechanism

The check cannot change the price, yet it changes the person's mood as if an action occurred. Checking the portfolio produces a small recalibration. Telling the November story also produces a recalibration, upward. Both are mood management. One involves actual numbers.

Uncertainty may be converted into certainty by checking the same number again under identical conditions. The number is checked. The certainty lasts a few hours. The November story lasts longer.

Finding

No corrective action is noted or recommended. The story is accurate. The story is useful. The total portfolio is available in the app for anyone who wishes to consult it, including the subject, who checks it daily and then tells the November story anyway.
