FORENSIC FINDINGS — Grocery Hunger Inflation

SUBJECT: Shopping cart contents versus shopping list contents under hunger conditions.

The List

The list was created before leaving the house, in a state of adequate nutrition. It contained seven items representing three days of planned meals. The list was accurate and sufficient.

The Hunger

The meal was delayed. Shopping occurred forty minutes after the scheduled lunch time. By the time of shopping, the hunger state was elevated above the state in which the list was created.

The Inflation Mechanism

The hunger-inflation mechanism operates as follows:

Items on the list: found and placed in cart as planned. No inflation in the list items.

Items not on the list: encountered in the store and evaluated by a judgment system that is calibrated by the current hunger state. Under hunger conditions, the judgment system assigns higher probability to "this will be eaten" and lower weight to "this was not on the list."

Biscuits: reasonable. There are always biscuits needed. Chips: elevated probability assessment due to hunger-enhanced snack appeal. Chocolate: impulse. Acknowledged at time of placement. Extra yogurt: the first yogurt looked small because yogurt looked appealing. Pasta and sauce: dinner inspiration. Genuine inspiration. Unplanned. Frozen item: rated highly under hunger evaluation. May have been rated lower otherwise.

The Outcome

The checkout total was higher than planned. All items were consumed within one week. The inflation produced appropriate supplies rather than unused ones.

The Finding

Hunger-inflated shopping is not irrational when the additional items are eaten. It is inefficient in that the selection process is driven by present hunger rather than planned need. The present hunger is a relevant signal.

Shop on a full stomach for planned items. Shop hungry for discovery.
