Findings Concerning Train Platform Scanning

The display shows two minutes. The platform is being scanned for signs of the train anyway. The display has not been wrong before.

This information was accurate: the display is connected to the train's location system and updates in real time. The three minutes was a genuine estimate, not a round number.

The platform was scanned anyway.

The Findings

The scan is directed toward the tunnel opening or the far end of the platform, depending on the direction of arrival. The scan is looking for the train. The scan cannot see further than the display can report; the display knows where the train is and the scan does not have access to this information.

The display is a better source of train-arrival information than a visual scan of the platform. The visual scan is performed regardless.

The Reason

The scan is not primarily about information. The display provides adequate information. The scan is a physical expression of waiting: looking in the direction of the expected thing. It is what waiting looks like when performed by a person who cannot remain still.

The scan also provides hope-based information: the appearance of light at the tunnel end, the sound of approaching movement, the slight change in air pressure that precedes a train. These signals arrive before the train becomes visible and before the display updates to zero minutes.

The scan catches these signals. The scan, in this narrow window, provides information the display does not.

The Finding

The scan is unnecessary for most of the waiting period. The display is sufficient. For the final thirty seconds, the scan may provide information that the display has not yet reflected.

The scan at minute three: unnecessary. The scan at thirty seconds: possibly useful.

Both happen. The distinction is not made during the wait.
