Evidence
A food container of standard dimensions occupies a position on the second shelf of the subject's kitchen cabinet. The container is intact and functional. It has no lid.
The lid has not been located. The lid is believed to exist. This belief is held with the same quiet confidence that people apply to all things they have not recently seen but have no specific reason to doubt. The lid is probably around.
At the time of the review, the kitchen drawer contained three additional lids without verified containers, and two containers without lids of any demonstrable provenance. It is possible that some of these orphaned lids match some of these orphaned containers. No matching tests have been performed.
Findings
The container functions as a container. The lid, wherever it is, presumably functions as a lid. Neither is performing its primary role in relation to the other.
The subject's stated position is that discarding the lidless container would be premature given that the lid may yet be found. This position has been held for an estimated eleven months. It is not incorrect. It is also not a plan.
Two replacement containers have been purchased since the lid went missing. Both have lids. Both lids are present and accounted for, giving them a statistically remarkable occupancy rate compared to the original pair.
Contributing Factors
The lidless container continued to be used as temporary storage, as a bowl for snacks that did not require a cover, and as a vessel for items placed inside it during kitchen tidying and never removed. These uses reinforced its presence in the cabinet and reduced the apparent urgency of resolving the lid situation.
The matching lid, if present, has been given no equivalent opportunity to surface.
Conclusion
The container will remain. The lid is not coming back. These two facts can coexist indefinitely without producing a decision, which is why they have.
