Minutes of the Grocery Delivery Window Formal Review Third Occurrence
Matter Under Review
The nine to eleven delivery window was selected at checkout. The time was selected because the recipient had availability during that period and could not receive a delivery at other times without making arrangements.
The delivery arrived at one forty-five.
History
This is the third delivery this month. On the first occasion, a nine to eleven window produced delivery at twelve twenty. On the second occasion, a ten to twelve window produced delivery at two thirty. On the third occasion, the outcome is documented above.
The window has not been accurate on any occasion.
Analysis of the Window
The delivery window is a range of time during which a delivery is estimated to occur. The estimate is produced at checkout based on driver availability, route optimization, and current order volume.
The estimate does not account for conditions between checkout and delivery, which include driver assignment changes, route modifications, added stops, and traffic. These conditions are not anomalous. They are routine properties of the delivery environment.
The window is a commitment the system cannot keep and continues to make.
Consequence
The person who scheduled a nine to eleven window and canceled plans for that period has not received what they paid for. They have received the groceries and a four-hour period of restricted availability.
The delivery service offers a credit for missed windows in some cases. The credit is applied to a future order. The future order will also have a window.
The Absurd Rule
The service sends a notification approximately forty minutes before delivery indicating the driver is nearby. This notification arrives before the scheduled window on approximately ten percent of deliveries and after the scheduled window on approximately forty percent.
The window remains in the interface.
Reluctant Assessment
The driver delivering the groceries has a route that does not reduce to a predictable schedule, because routes are built on variables that cannot be controlled. The driver is not responsible for the window. The window is produced by a system the driver cannot see.
The recipient is also not at fault. They selected a window in good faith and arranged their schedule accordingly.
The system produced a commitment from one party to another that neither party controlled and that the system did not intend to enforce.
No Resolution
The review committee finds no resolution available within the current service structure. The committee will reconvene on the next delivery.
