Hearing Concerning Summer Floor Sleeping
Testimony gathered on the practice of choosing a tiled floor over available furniture during periods of sustained heat.
CHAIR: Please describe the initial circumstances.
WITNESS: It was May. The fan was running. The mattress retained heat in a manner that was not compatible with sleep. I moved to the floor.
CHAIR: Was this a considered decision?
WITNESS: At the time, no. After the fact, yes. Summer floor sleeping solves the immediate inconvenience once. The floor was fifteen degrees cooler. Sleep occurred within approximately twelve minutes.
CHAIR: And the repetition?
WITNESS: That success makes repetition feel safer than reconsidering the behavior from scratch. I returned to the floor the following night. And the night after. At some point the floor became the primary sleeping surface and the bed became where I kept my phone.
CHAIR: This committee notes that suitable furniture was available throughout.
WITNESS: The furniture was available. The behavior is minor enough to seem accidental, but repetition turns it into reliable local knowledge. I knew where to sleep. The floor is where that was.
CHAIR: When did the workaround formalize?
WITNESS: I would say it formalized when I stopped checking whether it was hot enough to justify it. I moved to the floor because that is where I sleep in May. The temperature became a description, not a condition.
CHAIR: And after summer ended?
WITNESS: After enough repeats, the workaround survives even when the original inconvenience is gone. I slept on the floor into October. Under the governing rule, one successful use of summer floor sleeping creates precedent for the next similar moment. The precedent held.
CHAIR: Do you consider this a problem?
WITNESS: I consider it a system. The floor is cool. The system works. Whether it was supposed to become a system is a different question, which I have not been asked.
CHAIR: This committee has no further questions at this time.
