Hearing on Notification Test Message

Reacting to a self-generated test alert demonstrates that alert suppression and alert response occupy the same cognitive channel.

EXAMINER: Walk me through what happened.

WITNESS: I was configuring notification settings for an application. To verify the settings were working, I sent myself a test alert. The test alert appeared. I reacted to it.

EXAMINER: You reacted.

WITNESS: I picked up the phone. I read the alert. I confirmed it was the test alert I had just sent. I put the phone down.

EXAMINER: Despite knowing the alert was coming.

WITNESS: Despite sending the alert myself, yes.

EXAMINER: Notification test message steals one extra check of the screen.

WITNESS: That is one way to characterize it. I would characterize it as evidence that the check-response coupling is stronger than conscious knowledge of the alert's content. I knew exactly what the alert would say. The screen lit up and I checked it anyway.

EXAMINER: The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted.

WITNESS: The check runs independently of the alert's legitimacy or origin. Muting changes what generates the alert. It does not change the response to a screen that lights up.

EXAMINER: The alert is called noise while ignoring it creates more attention.

WITNESS: The attention required to maintain the decision to ignore the alert is comparable to the attention required to check it. Muting is not rest. It is a different kind of vigilance. You are now monitoring whether you are successfully not-monitoring.

EXAMINER: Attention management turns into another inbox.

WITNESS: That is the finding I was arriving at, yes.

EXAMINER: No further questions.

The hearing finds that notification test message reveals the mechanism underlying alert management rather than exploiting a flaw in it. Under the governing rule, it becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The witness's description of muting as a different kind of vigilance is entered into the record without comment.
