Hearing on Run Weather Inspection
Three separate weather forecasts were consulted before the person accepted that outside still exists.
TRANSCRIPT OF PROCEEDINGS Hearing on Run Weather Inspection Convened: 6:47 AM
CHAIR: State your purpose.
WITNESS: I was going to go for a run.
CHAIR: At what point did the weather become relevant?
WITNESS: I checked once. To see if it was raining.
CHAIR: Was it raining?
WITNESS: No. But the forecast showed a 30% chance later.
CHAIR: Thirty percent chance of rain is not rain.
WITNESS: I know. But thirty percent is meaningful. It seemed worth checking again.
CHAIR: You checked again.
WITNESS: I checked a different app. The second app said 25%. Which is different enough that I wanted to understand the discrepancy.
CHAIR: Understanding a discrepancy between forecasts is not the same as going for a run.
WITNESS: No. But I also checked the radar. The radar showed a cell forming to the west.
CHAIR: How far west?
WITNESS: About forty kilometers.
CHAIR: So the rain, if it came, would arrive no earlier than.
WITNESS: An hour. At least. Maybe two.
CHAIR: The run you planned was how long?
WITNESS: Thirty minutes.
[Pause of approximately four seconds.]
CHAIR: So you had the information you needed after the first check.
WITNESS: The governing rule requires that a fitness goal may be rescued by run weather inspection even when the underlying habit remains unchanged. I was being thorough.
CHAIR: Run weather inspection creates a small burst of motivation or guilt. Which did you experience?
WITNESS: Both. Mostly guilt by the third check.
CHAIR: Did you go for the run?
WITNESS: I was preparing to. The forecast updated.
CHAIR: What did the update say?
WITNESS: 35%.
CHAIR: So higher than before.
WITNESS: Only slightly. But higher.
CHAIR: And then?
WITNESS: I decided to do an indoor workout instead. Which I also needed to research.
CHAIR: Eventually maintaining proof of being active competes directly with doing the activity.
WITNESS: That seems like a strong way to put it.
CHAIR: The weather, for the record, remained dry until 4:00 PM.
WITNESS: I know.
