Contributing Factors

The phone is designed to reduce manual adjustment through ambient light sensors and automatic brightness. Automatic brightness is enabled on this phone. Automatic brightness adjusts with a slight lag that is shorter than the person's adjustment reflex. The person adjusts before the phone has time to adjust, then the phone adjusts further, and the result is a combined adjustment that satisfies neither party.

Manual override of automatic brightness is enabled each time the person adjusts. This disables automatic brightness until the phone decides to re-enable it. The phone re-enables it on its own schedule.

The person makes one minor adjustment. The adjustment becomes part of an expected sequence. Eventually removing the adjustment requires a conversation longer than the behavior ever saved.

Action Items

None assigned. Correcting screen brightness memory requires more authority than repeating it. The authority has not been located.

Incident remains open.
