Interim Order on Estimated Time Bargaining
The delivery app says forty minutes. The subject has already begun negotiating with the forty minutes.

The subject accepted this and immediately began revising it.
I.
Forty minutes is the floor, not the ceiling. This is the subject's established interpretation based on fourteen months of delivery app use. The actual delivery time has exceeded the estimated delivery time in eleven of the last seventeen orders. The subject holds this data without having consciously compiled it.
The working estimate is now forty-five to fifty-five minutes.

The subject opens the tracking screen at the thirty-minute mark. The delivery person has not yet been assigned. A new delivery person being assigned at the thirty-minute mark has, in the subject's experience, resulted in a sixty-five minute total delivery time on two separate occasions.
A delivery person is assigned at minute thirty-two.
The revised estimate is now fifty to sixty minutes.

The subject checks the screen again at minute thirty-nine. The delivery person is seven minutes away according to the map. Seven minutes plus the time to climb the stairs is approximately nine minutes. The original estimate may have been accurate.
The subject recalibrates. Forty-five minutes. Realistic.
Any estimate becomes a contract the moment someone structures their hunger around it. The subject last ate at 1 PM. The current time is 7:41 PM. The subject has been managing their hunger against the forty-minute estimate since the order was placed. The hunger has been deferred on the grounds that forty minutes is not very long, a judgment that has been revised incrementally across the last forty-one minutes.
IV.
The app is supposed to replace uncertainty with information, yet it generates a new kind of uncertainty that is worse because it has a number attached. A number can be wrong in precise ways. The subject knows this. The subject refreshes the screen.
The delivery person is now five minutes away.
V.
The knock comes at minute forty-four. The food is correct and warm. The subject is relieved in a way that is proportionate not to the outcome but to the duration of the uncertainty that preceded it.
The subject rates the delivery four stars.
The delivery was fine. Four stars accounts for the eleven previous orders. The rating system does not have a field for this.
