Annual Review of Health Update Timestamp Covering the Period March 2020 to May 2021

Background

A health update is a message sent to one or more people confirming the current status of a person's health. In normal circumstances, health updates are rare. Between March 2020 and May 2021, health updates became a standard communication format, occurring in most households at irregular intervals and carrying a social weight that routine messages do not.

The timestamp of the health update is not a neutral fact. It is the primary evidence used by recipients to determine whether the update is still current.

First Consequence

A health update sent once creates an expectation of continued updates that was not agreed to. The first update informed three family members that the sender was feeling mild symptoms but was not concerned. The three family members responded with individual messages. The individual messages asked different versions of the same question, which was: are you still okay?

The update was sent seven hours earlier. The subject was still okay. The subject sent a second update. The second update created a third round of individual messages asking when the follow-up appointment was.

There was no appointment. The subject was tired.

Second Consequence

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around health update timestamp. The subject's mother developed a practice of noting the exact time the last update was sent and treating messages older than six hours as requiring confirmation. This practice was not communicated to the subject. The subject discovered it when a message sent at 9 AM was followed by a call at 3 PM asking for an update.

The subject had been fine the entire time.

Third Consequence

The message is supposed to close the inquiry, yet each reply opens a new one. The update is evidence that a situation exists worth updating about. The existence of the situation makes all subsequent silence ambiguous. Silence could mean everything is fine. It could mean something is wrong. These two interpretations are not distinguishable from a distance.

The Absurd Rule

A health update sent without a timestamp must have its timestamp inferred from the family group chat's previous messages, which places the update somewhere between the last message about the update and the first message sent after the update.

This is how the family now determines whether the 9 AM update is still current at 4 PM.

The Contradiction

Sending a health update reduces short-term anxiety for recipients. It increases the sender's total communication burden by approximately three to five messages per update. A person who is mildly unwell is now also managing a small customer service operation on the topic of their own health.

The annual pattern is consistent. No revision recommended at this time.
