Interim Order on Mentor Thank You Rollcall

Public acknowledgment of mentorship now follows a documented sequence that this office has been asked to ratify.

Had a standard acknowledgment protocol been established at any point before the current practice developed, this office would not be required to document the practice retroactively. The standard acknowledgment protocol was not established. This office is therefore documenting the practice retroactively.

The practice under review is the mentor thank you rollcall: the sequential public acknowledgment of individuals who provided professional guidance during a career milestone, announced via public professional communication channels at the moment of achieving the milestone.

COUNTERFACTUAL PATHWAY ONE

Had the rollcall been limited to direct mentors, the acknowledgment would consist of two to four individuals in most cases, delivered in one post of manageable length, concluding within thirty seconds of reading. No further documentation would be required.

This pathway was available. It was not taken.

COUNTERFACTUAL PATHWAY TWO

Had the rollcall been limited to professional relationships of more than one year's duration, a natural boundary would have existed. The milestone announcer would have possessed a clear criterion for inclusion and exclusion. Borderline cases could have been resolved by reference to the criterion.

This pathway was also available. It was also not taken.

CURRENT PRACTICE

The current practice begins with direct mentors and expands outward through concentric circles of professional influence. The expansion follows no documented rule. It proceeds until the announcer experiences a subjective sense of completion, which occurs at different points for different announcers and cannot be predicted in advance.

The rollcall has no agreed stopping point. It has only the point at which stopping happened.

This office notes the following consequences. First, individuals who receive public acknowledgment and were not expecting it must now decide whether to respond publicly, and if so in what terms. Second, individuals in the same professional network who do not receive acknowledgment must decide whether this constitutes an oversight or an assessment. Third, the length of the rollcall functions as a proxy signal for the depth of the announcer's professional network, which creates an incentive for expansion that is independent of actual debt of gratitude.

FINDING

The practice is documented. The counterfactual pathways are documented. The incentive structure is documented.

No recommendation is issued at this time.
