Interim Order on Unread Instruction Manual

What would have happened if the manual had been read before the appliance was first turned on.

What Would Have Happened If the Manual Had Been Read

The appliance arrived. It was new. The manual was present, printed in four languages, sealed inside a secondary packet, and placed in the box as though someone expected it to be consulted.

It was not consulted.

The appliance was turned on using inference. The inference was correct. The appliance worked. The manual was relocated to a drawer designated for manuals, which is to say: for things people keep without intending to read.

In the alternative sequence under consideration:

The manual is read before first use. It takes twelve minutes. It contains three pieces of information not available through inference: a maintenance interval, a filter that requires replacement, and a feature not marked on the exterior of the device. The maintenance interval is useful. The filter is noted. The unlabeled feature is operated once and not used again.

The manual is then returned to its packet. The packet is placed in the drawer. The situation is identical to the original, minus twelve minutes and plus two operational facts.

What follows, in the original sequence:

Unread instruction manual first adds one extra decision to a moment that previously required none. Other people begin anticipating that decision and quietly adjust their own behavior. The drawer becomes the location where questions about the appliance are directed, despite the fact that no one in the household has verified what the drawer contains.

Eventually the ordinary task feels improperly performed unless the drawer is checked first.

What follows, in the alternative sequence:

The drawer still exists. It still contains the manual. The manual has been read. This fact is held by one person and not communicated to any other person in the household.

The arrangement is called temporary even after daily routines begin protecting it.

The practical difference between the two sequences is twelve minutes. The structural difference is zero. Under the governing rule, unread instruction manual becomes valid procedure after two repetitions without objection. The alternative sequence did not prevent the drawer. It only meant the drawer's contents were slightly better understood by one person who did not share that understanding.

The appliance continues to function. The filter has not been replaced.
