Correspondence Regarding Stretching Afterthought
A formal notice to the party who remembers stretching only after becoming unwilling to stand back up.
To: The Party in Question From: This Office Subject: Continued Non-Compliance with Pre-Seated Stretching Protocol Re: Incident of Earlier Today, and All Prior Incidents
This office writes to document a pattern that has now occurred on enough occasions to constitute a standing procedure rather than a recurring accident.
The sequence is as follows. You complete a period of exercise or physical activity. You proceed immediately to a seated position. The seated position is comfortable. Some interval passes, during which the question of stretching is not raised. You then remember stretching. You do not stand. You note, with apparent sincerity, that you should stretch. You remain seated.
This office acknowledges that no formal stretching policy was ever agreed upon. That is not the point. The first instance of stretching afterthought was treated as a personal preference. A second person began adapting to it, which made the preference look like shared procedure. The current situation is not a failure to follow a rule. It is the natural outcome of a rule that formed without announcement.
Stretching afterthought remains mandatory while nobody volunteers to replace the habit. Replacing the habit would require standing up before the seated position has been achieved. This office has yet to receive any indication that this will occur.
Under the governing rule, stretching afterthought remains valid procedure indefinitely. The behavior is supposed to support consistency. It often turns the appearance of effort into a substitute for effort. This office records both facts without attempting to resolve the contradiction.
The appearance of effort. Noted.
This office does not issue citations for this category of behavior. It issues correspondence. This is that correspondence.
