A person puts on a mask, checks the seal, proceeds to their destination, and rechecks the seal upon arrival, which was not in the original plan.

Background
A properly fitted mask creates a seal at the edges sufficient to reduce transmission of respiratory particles. The seal is established at the moment of application. The user can confirm the seal by pressing the metal nose strip against the bridge of the nose, running a finger along the top edge, and confirming no air escapes at the sides.
This takes six seconds.
The Recheck
A person applied their mask at home before leaving for a scheduled appointment. The seal was confirmed. The person traveled to the appointment, removed their outer garment, and confirmed the seal again.
The seal was identical to its initial configuration.
Finding 1: The Informational Value of the Recheck
The seal was correct when applied. The check at destination confirms it is still correct. The intervening period during which the seal was unchecked is the period during which the mask was being used for its intended purpose.
The recheck has confirmed that the mask performed correctly during the period it was not being checked. A person who checks twice has not done more than a person who checked once. They have spent additional time confirming a result the first check already provided.
Finding 2: Why the Recheck Occurs
The mask cannot be seen by the wearer during use. It is felt, at the nose and at the sides, but not observed. This absence of direct observation creates a narrow window of uncertainty that the recheck addresses.
The uncertainty is small. The recheck is disproportionate to it. Both things can be true.
Finding 3: The April 2021 Context
With vaccines in distribution and guidance evolving, mask requirements are changing. Some destinations now permit unmasked entry for vaccinated individuals. Some do not. The person rechecking the seal is in an environment where the seal still matters and has correctly maintained it.
The recheck, in this context, is an expression of appropriate caution applied to a situation that already has the seal it needs.
Governing Note
There is reluctant sympathy available for the mask seal recheck, because the behavior costs thirty seconds and imposes nothing on anyone else and represents a person trying to do the correct thing by confirming it twice rather than once.
The cost is thirty seconds. The finding is always the same. The seal is fine.
It was fine the first time.
