Record of Double Mask Preparation Forensic Analysis, April 30, 2021

Subject

A person preparing to leave a residential unit to complete a grocery errand with an estimated duration of seventeen minutes, including transit.

Preparation Sequence

3:42 PM: Subject retrieves cloth mask from designated hook near door.

3:43 PM: Subject identifies that the cloth mask selected is the non-preferred cloth mask, as the preferred cloth mask is in the laundry. Subject evaluates available cloth masks. Selects alternate.

3:44 PM: Subject retrieves surgical mask from supply drawer. Surgical mask supply has two remaining. Subject notes this and does not yet add masks to the shopping list, which will be added at 3:46 PM.

3:45 PM: Subject applies surgical mask first, adjusting nose wire. Applies cloth mask over surgical mask, checking that the edges of the cloth mask overlap adequately with the surgical mask below. Adjusts cloth mask. Re-adjusts nose wire on surgical mask, which moved during cloth mask application.

3:46 PM: Subject adds surgical masks to the grocery list. The store may not carry this brand. Subject notes this and does not resolve it.

Findings

The preparation time is four minutes. The errand duration is seventeen minutes. The preparation time as a percentage of errand duration has not been calculated by the person undertaking the preparation, and this omission is itself a finding.

Finding 1: Efficacy

Double masking is an evidence-based intervention with documented efficacy improvements over single masking. This is what makes the four-minute preparation time difficult to address directly. The preparation is for something real.

Finding 2: The Preferred Mask

The preferred cloth mask is in the laundry because it was used for the last errand. The last errand was three days ago. The mask has been washed and is dry. It has not been moved back to the hook. It is on a drying rack, where it has been for two days, and where the subject has walked past it six times without moving it.

The non-preferred mask has been designated as non-preferred due to a fit issue that produces minor fogging of the subject's glasses. This issue is present today.

Finding 3: The Contradiction

The preparation sequence is thorough. The supply check is accurate. The list update is appropriate. Each individual step is correct. Together, they constitute a four-minute preparation protocol for a seventeen-minute errand executed in a neighborhood where outdoor transmission risk is low, by a person who received their second vaccine dose sixteen days ago.

This contradiction cannot be resolved from inside the preparation sequence. It is only visible from outside it.

Status

Subject departed at 3:47 PM. The errand was completed at 4:04 PM. The surgical masks were not available at this store. The preferred cloth mask was moved to the hook upon return.

The preparation protocol for the next errand is unchanged.
