Midnight Fridge Light Has Exceeded Its Original Mandate
The fridge was opened without a plan. The light made an inventory possible. The inventory is now in progress.
It is 11:48pm. The fridge door opens.
There was no plan before the door opened. There was a feeling, vague and directional, that the kitchen contained something that should be investigated. The fridge was selected as the investigation site. The door opens and the light comes on.
The light is the problem.
Under normal conditions, opening a fridge without a specific food in mind results in closing the fridge without a specific food. The light changes this. The light illuminates. The light makes the contents legible. Legible contents become contents that can be compared, evaluated, and found slightly wanting.
Someone opens the fridge late at night with no planned food and lets the light conduct the search.
The left shelf: three items. The first is acceptable. The second requires a companion item. The third is what the second required a companion to avoid.
The middle shelf: something that has been there since Tuesday. It is fine. Probably fine. It smells fine when the container is opened a short distance.
The door: condiments with jurisdiction over nothing currently available.
A minor food choice starts receiving procedural attention. The ritual gains exceptions, timing rules, and a preferred method defended from memory.
The method in this case is: consider the left shelf, reconsider the door condiments in case something pairs, return to the left shelf with updated information.
The fridge is closed without a conclusion.
The fridge is opened again thirty seconds later because the conclusion was the container on the middle shelf, which was selected during the first evaluation and not removed.
By the end, hunger is merely the funding source for a ceremony that now has its own constitution.
The middle shelf item is removed. It is, in fact, fine.
The kitchen light is off. The fridge is closed. The ceremony is complete.
