The Matter of Fridge Hum Midnight

The apartment is quiet. The apartment has been quiet before, and the quiet has always resolved into something else, a door, a notification, the street. This time it does not. It resolves into the refrigerator.

The refrigerator is running.

It has always been running. This is not new information. The compressor has cycled on and off an estimated several thousand times since the appliance was delivered and positioned against the kitchen wall. The person in the other room has been present for most of these cycles. Tonight is the first time the person has heard them.

Once fridge hum midnight is consciously noticed, it may demand attention on every repeat.

The cycle is approximately four minutes on, two minutes off. This is not written down anywhere. The person now knows it. They know it the way you know something you never decided to learn: completely, suddenly, with the vague feeling that this knowledge is occupying space that was not previously available.

The person has discovered the fridge has a nighttime personality.

The daytime fridge is background. The nighttime fridge is present. The nighttime fridge has a rhythm and a pitch and a small irregularity near the end of each cycle that the person has begun waiting for. They do not want to be waiting for it. They are waiting for it.

The two minutes of silence are now loud with anticipation.

The compressor resumes.

Eventually the room is mentally organized around a noise that was originally considered background. The furniture is where it always was. The walls have not moved. The layout of the apartment is identical to the layout of the apartment at any previous moment.

The difference is the fridge.

The fridge is exactly as loud as it has always been. It is filling the entire room.
