Present: The subject. Several friends, arriving in two waves separated by forty minutes, a gap the subject did not anticipate when the invitation was accepted by everyone simultaneously. The flat, which had not seen this many people since the previous spring.
Background
The subject wanted to have people over. This was genuine. After two years of intermittent restriction, the desire to occupy a shared space with people the subject liked was not theoretical. The subject issued invitations and was pleased when they were accepted.
The preparation began four days before the event.
First Consequence
The first case of house guest adjustment changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject, preparing the flat for arrival, notices aspects of the flat that do not register during ordinary habitation: a light that flickers in a way that seemed charming and now seems inconvenient, a chair that needs to be moved to create a configuration allowing conversation, the question of whether the music should be on when people arrive or whether that creates an expectation of a kind of event this is not. Each decision is small. There are seventeen of them.
Second Consequence
After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around house guest adjustment. Social recovery time must be hidden inside the calendar because wanting people and needing rest are treated as opposites. These are not opposites. They are sequential requirements. The want precedes; the need follows. The calendar only holds one.
The Contradiction
The event was wanted and often enjoyed, yet recovery from it is treated like a separate appointment.
It is a separate appointment. Nobody scheduled it. It happened in 2022 in living rooms across cities where people had just remembered they knew how to have guests, and found they needed an afternoon to remember how to be alone again.
