Someone moves a self imposed launch date without telling anyone because nobody else knew it existed.

Provisional Order on Launch Date Drift Issued Under General Authority of Personal Project Governance

The subject set a launch date. The launch date was March 1st. The subject did not tell anyone the date was March 1st because the project existed in a state of semi-public development in which announcing a date would have created accountability the subject was not prepared to accept. March 1st passed. The date was moved to March 15th. March 15th is approaching.

This document is issued in advance of March 15th.

First Consequence

The first case of launch date drift changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject, having moved the date once, now understands the date to be movable. A movable date is a different object than a fixed date. It has different properties. It responds differently to pressure. A fixed date resists movement. A movable date invites renegotiation at the first sign of inconvenience. The subject's date is now movable. This change happened silently, on a Sunday, with no witnesses.

Second Consequence

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around launch date drift. Nobody knew about the original date, so nobody has adjusted to any specific change. But people who interact with the subject have noticed that the project is perpetually in the final stages of completion. They have adjusted their questions accordingly. They no longer ask when it launches. They ask how it is going. How it is going is a safe question. How it is going cannot produce an accountability moment because going is not arriving.

Third Consequence

Eventually launch date drift acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The subject now refers to the project as the ongoing project rather than by its actual name, which subtly reclassifies it as a process rather than a deliverable. A process cannot be late. Processes are by definition in motion. The terminology change is not deliberate. It emerged from the accumulated weight of too many conversations about a project that has not shipped.

The Absurd Rule

Visible preparation counts as revenue adjacent activity until the first customer forces a different standard. The standard is never forced in advance. It arrives only when someone attempts to pay and discovers there is nothing yet available to buy.

The Contradiction

The project is supposed to create freedom, yet it keeps generating unpaid administrative work.

The date management is work. The mental accounting of what remains is work. The explanation of why it has not launched, prepared in advance for conversations that may or may not happen, is work. None of it appears on a timesheet. In 2022, this was called building something.
