Minutes Regarding Cart Abandonment Hunger

A brief exchange of correspondence documenting the experience of browsing food delivery options for an extended period and arriving, hungry, at no decision.

3 MIN READonline grocery ritual

7:12 p.m.

Opening the app. I'm going to order something, eat early, and get to the thing I was supposed to do this evening.

7:14 p.m.

There are forty-seven restaurants. I'm going to narrow this down by category. I want something that feels right. I'll know it when I see it.

7:19 p.m.

I have looked at the sushi options. The sushi is fine. None of the sushi is the right sushi. I'm going to look at the noodle options.

7:23 p.m.

The noodle place I was thinking of has a forty-minute delivery estimate. That's too long. I'm going to look at what's close.

7:26 p.m.

I've filtered by distance. The results are pizza, a place that delivers one thing in large quantities, and a restaurant I don't recognize. I've added two items from the pizza place to the cart.

7:28 p.m.

I'm looking at the pizza cart. The items seem fine. I don't want pizza. I've cleared the cart.

7:31 p.m.

I'm looking at the place I don't recognize. Their photos are good. Their reviews are good. They have a 4.6 rating from 340 reviews. I have spent four minutes on this restaurant.

7:35 p.m.

I have added items from the unrecognized restaurant to the cart. The total is, accounting for fees, approximately what I would expect. The fee line is a number that I noted and then chose to continue anyway. I'm ready to check out.

7:37 p.m.

I'm on the checkout screen. I'm reading the items. I realize I added something I don't particularly want. I'm going back.

7:41 p.m.

I have removed the item I didn't want and replaced it with a different item. The cart now looks correct. I'm returning to checkout.

7:43 p.m.

I have closed the app. I'm going to make something at home. The process has taken thirty-one minutes and I am exactly as hungry as I was when I opened the app. There is pasta.

8:01 p.m.

The pasta is fine.

The restaurant with the 4.6 rating was ordered from the following week. The food was good. The correspondence notes this without commentary.
