PROVISIONAL CLASSIFICATION NOTICE Office of Behavioral Content Classification Subject: Monday Motivation Resistance Classification: Structural: Stable Issued: August 2021

Background

Monday motivation content is a category of material, distributed primarily through social media and professional networking platforms, that presents Mondays as an opportunity rather than an obligation. The content takes several forms: photographs of landscapes with superimposed text asserting that potential is boundless, brief essays describing how successful individuals approach the start of the work week, numbered lists of practices that the reader is encouraged to adopt, and direct-address imperatives such as "Own this week" or "Your goals are waiting."

The content is produced in high volume. It appears consistently. Its recipients have developed what the Classification Office is now formally designating as Monday Motivation Resistance.

Classification Rationale

Resistance is defined here as a stable reduction in the content's expected effect. Where early exposure to motivational content produced, in some recipients, a brief period of elevated intention, current exposure produces recognition and little else. The recipient identifies the content's form before completing it, generates an accurate prediction of its conclusion, and continues the day at the same level of motivation as before.

This is not cynicism. Cynicism implies a prior belief. Many recipients of Monday motivation content never had a prior belief in its efficacy. Resistance is more precise: a calibration, achieved through repeated exposure, of what the content reliably does, which is not what it says it does.

Three Consequences

First, the producers of Monday motivation content have responded to declining engagement by increasing intensity and specificity. The content now makes more particular claims, references more concrete data, and deploys more urgent language than earlier iterations. Resistance has largely absorbed these modifications.

Second, the Monday morning experience, for most recipients, proceeds without the infusion of motivation the content promised. The work week begins. The content was encountered. The correlation is not causal.

Third, the continued production and consumption of Monday motivation content, despite its documented limited efficacy, suggests that the content serves a function other than the one it advertises. What function this is remains under investigation. Possible answers include community signal, habitual consumption pattern, and the maintenance of a theoretical Monday that is better than the actual one.

The Governing Rule

Monday motivation content will continue to be produced and distributed. Monday will continue to arrive. The distance between the Monday described in the content and the Monday experienced will remain approximately constant.

Contradiction

Motivation is most useful precisely on Mondays. The content targeting this fact exists in sufficient quantity that it no longer produces it. The thing that is needed most is the thing most people have learned to scroll past.

This classification is provisional pending evidence that resistance patterns change. No such evidence is anticipated.
