Minutes Regarding Fomo Room Attendance
Any repeat of fomo room attendance must be treated as procedure until the original uncertainty has clearly ended.
Consider the version of this that did not happen.
In that version, the notification arrived while you were eating. You saw the room title. You put the phone down. The dinner continued. The room ended while you were doing something else. In the morning you checked and found no summary, no recording, no archived transcript. The room had been forty minutes of people talking about something that was also covered, in a different register, in a newsletter you already subscribe to.
That version of you slept well.
The Actual Version
Fomo room attendance adds one extra decision to a routine that previously needed none. The decision is not whether to join. The decision is whether the cost of not knowing is higher than the cost of spending the next forty minutes finding out.
This calculation resolves, consistently, in favor of joining.
The new decision creates screenshots, notes, or messages that must also be managed. In this case: a voice memo recorded immediately after leaving the room, describing the two things worth remembering. The voice memo has not been listened to since. It exists in a folder with eleven other voice memos from rooms attended under similar urgency.
The Social Mechanics
Private anxiety becomes procedure when more than one person starts coordinating around it. The coordination is visible when two people compare notes about a room they both attended and neither wanted to leave early.
The app promises casual listening. Joining is optional. Leaving is optional. There is no record of who was present. None of this changes the social arithmetic, which is that the person who was there and the person who was not there have different information, and information differences tend to matter in ways that are hard to predict and impossible to ignore.
The Counterfactual Finding
The supporting paperwork outlives the problem and becomes evidence that the ritual was necessary. The voice memo folder is the paperwork. It is evidence of nothing except the number of times the decision resolved in favor of joining.
The original uncertainty has not clearly ended. The next room notification will arrive. The calculation will repeat. The sympathy extended here is reluctant because the calculation is not irrational. It is only expensive in a currency that does not appear on any balance sheet.
