Correspondence: Notice of Continued Draft Title Fixation Operations

To: The person currently on their fourth title for a document that does not yet exist From: Documentation Review, Deferred Work Division Re: The title

It has come to our attention that the working title of your current project has been revised as follows:

  • "Thoughts on Q3" (original)
  • "Q3 Notes and Ideas" (revision 1, deemed too casual)
  • "Q3 Strategy Overview" (revision 2, deemed too formal)
  • "Q3 Working Notes" (revision 3, current)

The document currently contains one paragraph. The paragraph is a placeholder noting that the real writing will begin after the title is resolved.

We understand the impulse. A document that does not yet exist cannot have the wrong title, which is why the title must be right before the document begins. This reasoning is consistent. It is also the reason the document has not begun.

The governing rule applies: once draft title fixation produces a feeling of progress, real progress may be postponed without immediate penalty. The title feels like progress. The penalty for postponing the document has not arrived. The document has not arrived.

A brief note on the psychology of titling: the title is the first thing a future reader will see. The document is for a future reader who does not yet exist. The document is also not complete. The sequence in which these problems are being solved is: title first, document later, reader eventually.

This is a valid sequence. It is also a sequence in which the most important thing is always next.

The task is rescheduled into a future block that now carries even more expectations. The new block is this evening. This evening is currently well-regarded.

We wish the draft well in its current titled state.

Regards, Documentation Review

P.S. "Q3 Working Notes" is fine. Start the document.
