The Office Snack Drawer Is Now Officially a Procedure

The emergency snacks are consumed during non-emergencies at a rate that ensures the next emergency finds nothing.

Field Guide: The Office Snack Drawer

Subject: Emergency snack provisioning, occupational setting Classification: Food ritual, workplace behavior Intended Audience: The person whose snack drawer is never full when it matters

Stage 1: Procurement

The office snack drawer begins with good intentions. The subject acquires snacks: biscuits, nuts, maybe a granola bar purchased during a brief health period. These items are placed in a dedicated drawer. They are designated for emergencies.

An emergency is defined as: extreme hunger during a meeting that will not end, a long afternoon without a proper meal, a genuine blood sugar situation that requires immediate intervention.

Stage 2: Reclassification

The snacks are consumed on a Tuesday at 3:00 PM when the subject is not particularly hungry but the afternoon is long. This is reclassified as a minor emergency. The definition of emergency is adjustable.

The governing rule: any office snack drawer repeated three times becomes part of the meal and must be performed again. The afternoon snack is now a meal. It has its own timing.

Stage 3: The Drawer Ecology

The drawer develops an internal logic. Preferred items are consumed first. Backup items survive longer. One item, deemed unsatisfying when purchased, remains in the drawer past its best date. It is never eaten. It is never removed. It serves as evidence that the drawer exists.

Everyone nearby starts accommodating the ritual. Colleagues know the drawer exists. Nobody asks. The ritual gains exceptions: the good biscuits are reserved for hard days, the nuts are for actual hunger, the granola bar is for scenarios that have not yet occurred.

Stage 4: The Empty Drawer Problem

Stage 4 is the discovery that the drawer is empty, which is itself an emergency, which justifies a restocking trip. The restocking trip is treated as responsible planning. The new snacks are slightly nicer than the previous ones.

The ritual has upgraded. The budget has adjusted. By the end, hunger is merely the funding source for a ceremony that now has its own constitution.
