Notice of Continued Visit Length Ambiguity Operations
Neither party knows how to end the visit, so both parties remain until they have both stayed too long.

SUBJECT: Notice Regarding Visit Length Ambiguity, Ongoing
RE: The visit that ended forty minutes after it should have ended.
This notice is issued to formally document the occurrence of visit length ambiguity and its effects on the parties involved.
The visit began at the agreed time. It proceeded normally. Topics were covered, food was offered, coffee was accepted on the condition that it would not extend things too long.
It extended things too long.
The governing rule requires acknowledgment: once visit length ambiguity becomes a courtesy ritual, efficiency is no longer an acceptable reason to skip it. Neither party is efficient. Both parties are considerate. The consideration is the problem.
At the point where the visit could have ended naturally, both parties recognized the moment and neither party claimed it. A minor preference was left politely unstated. Each party then began adjusting behavior to avoid forcing the other party to state it.
The adjustment took the following forms: one party refreshed the coffee. The other accepted. Both parties understood this was a renewal, not a refreshment. The coffee was not why anyone stayed.

Both parties said it was good to see each other. This was true. The visit was good. The visit was forty minutes longer than the visit needed to be. These facts are compatible.
The office makes no recommendation. The ritual will continue. The coffee will be offered again. The next natural ending will also not be claimed. This is expected and has been factored into all future visit projections.
