The Matter of Post Workout Entitlement
A modest workout may authorize a snack the workout was not large enough to justify.
Scene 1.
The workout ended at 7:22 AM. Forty minutes. Mostly cardio, two sets of weights, one set abandoned. By any standard, a reasonable effort. The person opened the fridge.
The governing rule was not stated aloud. It did not need to be. A modest workout can make a much larger snack feel administratively approved.
Scene 2.
The snack was selected. It was larger than the workout. The accounting was performed internally. The accounting showed a surplus. The accounting was incorrect, but the accounting was satisfying.
Post Workout Entitlement produces one visible sign of commitment: the existence of the workout itself. That sign now justifies further negotiation with every refrigerator in a twenty-meter radius.
Scene 3.
The commitment attracted more planning. A new schedule was considered. The schedule was written in a notes app. The notes app already contained two previous schedules from months that had also begun with one good workout.
That sign attracts more planning about how to keep the commitment intact.
Scene 4.
By 9:15 AM the fitness system had an excellent administration. The schedule existed. The accountability app was reinstalled. The protein powder was reorganized. Exercise occurred at rates consistent with the current trajectory, which is to say inconsistently.
Soon the fitness system has excellent administration and inconsistent exercise.
Scene 5.
The guilt arrived around 11:00 AM. The governing rule addressed this too: if post workout entitlement creates guilt, the guilt may be treated as evidence of commitment. The guilt was processed as motivation. The motivation was redirected toward planning the next workout.
The next workout was scheduled for tomorrow.
The snack had been worth it. The accounting confirmed this. The accounting was still incorrect.
