The laundry needs to be done. The laundry has not been started. The reason is that starting requires being available when the cycle finishes.

THE CONSTRAINT
Starting laundry is not the act of putting clothes in a machine. Starting laundry is a commitment to being available approximately fifty to sixty minutes later to move the clothes to the dryer. The initial action is brief. The commitment is the obstacle.
ASSESSMENT BEFORE STARTING
Before starting laundry, the following conditions are evaluated:
Is there a commitment in the next ninety minutes? If yes, defer laundry. If no, proceed to next question.
Is there a commitment that might arrive in the next ninety minutes? If yes, defer. If maybe, defer and continue waiting.
Will starting now create an obligation at an inconvenient time? Define inconvenient: during a meal, during a scheduled rest, during something that requires sustained attention.
If the machine finishes at a convenient time, proceed. If the machine finishes at an inconvenient time, defer until a window that produces a convenient finish time.
THE AVAILABLE WINDOWS
Calculated windows for laundry start times that produce non-conflicting finish times: approximately three per day, averaging twenty minutes each. These windows are typically identified after they pass.
THE RESOLUTION
The laundry is started. The finish time is calculated. The finish time arrives during something. The clothes wait in the machine for forty minutes after the cycle ends before being moved.
The clothes are fine. They were in the machine. They waited.
The constraint that prevented laundry for most of the day produced a constraint that was worked around by the clothes being patient.
