STAGE 1: The First Draft

The first draft communicates the status accurately. "About forty percent done, tracking for the deadline." This is true. This is direct. This is not sent because "about" feels imprecise and "done" feels too casual for a progress report.

STAGE 2: The Precision Pass

"About" becomes "approximately." "Done" becomes "complete." The sentence is now technically more precise while communicating the same thing. It is also slightly more formal, which feels more appropriate for an update that might be read by someone senior.

The status is still forty percent.

STAGE 3: The Confidence Revision

"Approximately forty percent" implies some uncertainty about the forty percent. The update is revised to "we have completed forty percent of deliverables," which sounds more measured and less hedged. This sounds like someone who knows exactly where they are.

This version is also accurate. The forty percent was always known. The earlier hedging was social rather than epistemic.

STAGE 4: The Structure Pass

The update is now three sentences. The three sentences communicate: current status, trajectory, and expected next step. This is the standard structure for a status update. The structure is correct. The content is what it has always been.

STAGE 5: Sending

The update is sent. It is received. Three people read it. It communicates forty percent completion.

This took fourteen minutes. The status was forty percent at the end. The status was forty percent at the beginning. The fourteen minutes produced a more professionally structured description of the same number.
