This progress report addresses the arrival confirmation chain as a communicative phenomenon and documents preliminary findings regarding its structure, purpose, and outcomes.
The arrival confirmation chain refers to the sequence of messages exchanged between two or more individuals who have agreed to meet at a specific location and time. The sequence begins well before arrival and proceeds through multiple stages, each of which communicates information that is, in most cases, already possessed by both parties.
Stage one: departure confirmation. The first message is sent when one party leaves their current location. Its content is typically "leaving now" or a variant. Its informational value is limited, as the departure was already scheduled and the recipient can calculate an approximate arrival window from the agreed time. The message is nonetheless sent and expected.
Stage two: transit update. One or both parties provide information about their current position, mode of transport, or estimated time of arrival. This stage may include multiple sub-messages. The information is accurate but not actionable. Neither party can alter the other's transit time by knowing about it.
Stage three: proximity declaration. One party is "almost there," "two minutes away," "parking now," or "in the elevator." This message is understood to mean that waiting, if it has begun, will shortly end. It is welcomed even when the preceding updates made it predictable to within ninety seconds.
Stage four: arrival confirmation. One party has arrived and says so. If the other has not yet arrived, a brief waiting period follows, accompanied by a fourth message from the arriving party indicating that they are "here" and naming their specific location within the venue.
The absurd rule governing this system is that two people who have agreed to meet at a specific location and time will, in the period preceding that meeting, exchange an average of four to seven messages to confirm that the agreed-upon meeting is still proceeding as agreed.
The contradiction is that the arrival confirmation chain persists even when both parties are tracking each other's real-time location through a shared application, rendering the confirmations redundant to a system that has already made them redundant.
Both parties were informed of the other's departure, transit, and arrival in real time and still arrived at different moments. The chain continued regardless.
