By Monday morning that person had received two individual phone calls and three messages: two asking if everything was all right, one forwarding a photo taken during the call, and one noting that they had been missed.
The person had been at a birthday dinner. This was not a crisis. The follow-up treated it as a data point that required verification.
Family call escalation is the mechanism by which a single unreported absence generates more contact than the original event would have. The group call, had it been attended, would have lasted forty minutes and produced a warm feeling and a photo. The absence from the group call produced all of that plus a separate bilateral communication cycle with most of the same participants.
The mathematics here are worth noting. Presence is standard. Absence is notable. Notability generates effort. The family WhatsApp group was one of the institutions that held up under pandemic conditions by developing new protocols. The Sunday call was one of those protocols.
