Preliminary Findings on Hybrid Social Attendance
Coming to the office for a team event has started to govern what happens to the rest of the workday around it.
Finding 1: The team event is the reason for office attendance. The workday attached to it is a consequence of having made the commute.
Finding 2: Once the event is the anchor, the surrounding hours are organized around it rather than around task priority.
Finding 3: This pattern has repeated across enough quarters to be described as behavioral policy rather than coincidence.
The day is called flexible while requiring extra location planning. Flexibility, in the hybrid model, nominally means the employee chooses where to work based on the nature of the work. In practice, the social event determines the location, and the location determines what work is feasible, and the feasibility determination happens after the commute rather than before it.
Hybrid social attendance adds one coordination step to the day. The step is not the event itself. The step is the conversation that happens, without formal scheduling, between team members who are deciding whether to extend the office day given that they are already there.
Coworkers start planning around the attendance pattern. Meetings that might have been remote are rescheduled to coincide with event days because the attendance distribution is now predictable. Flexibility hardens into an unwritten schedule. The schedule is not maintained in any calendar visible to anyone who manages the team. It operates through informal coordination that produces attendance clusters on event days.
Under the governing rule, hybrid social attendance becomes procedure once a second event has been planned on a day when the first confirmed attendees were already expected from a prior event.
The contradiction is straightforward. The hybrid model was designed to give individuals discretion over location. The social event has inherited the coordination function that formal office schedules previously served. The discretion is preserved in form. In practice, the event provides the answer before the discretion is exercised.
Preliminary conclusion: the flexibility is real and the schedule is also real, and they are operating in parallel without resolving into each other.
