Preliminary Findings on Speaker Volume Staircase
The target volume is 18. You tapped the button eighteen times to get there. This is known to you.
PRELIMINARY FINDINGS
Subject: Speaker volume staircase behavior in personal audio device operation.
Background: The device in question provides a volume range of 0 to 30. The subject has a preferred listening volume. The preferred volume is known to the subject. Direct adjustment from current level to preferred level is supported by the device's interface, which includes a volume slider that can be moved to any position.
What was found: The slider is not used.
Observation 1: The Step-by-Step Pattern
The subject taps the volume button in single increments. Each tap increases volume by one unit. The subject knows the destination. The subject does not navigate directly to the destination.
The tap-by-tap approach offers no functional advantage over the slider. The slider would take approximately one second. The tap sequence takes between eight and twenty-two seconds, depending on the starting position.
The tapping feels correct. The slider feels like skipping steps.
Observation 2: The Intermediate Checks
At several points during the increment sequence, the subject pauses to assess whether the current volume is the target volume. It is not. The subject resumes tapping.
This assessment behavior suggests that the subject is not fully certain of the target volume before beginning the approach, despite having stated a preferred listening volume in this and previous sessions.
Observation 3: Overshoot and Correction
On two of the five documented sessions, the subject exceeded the target volume by one or two increments, then tapped down to the correct level. No distress was recorded. The adjustment was made with the same methodical quality as the ascent.
Speaker volume staircase must be repeated whenever the uncertainty it once reduced appears again. The uncertainty was: is this the right volume? The staircase addresses this by making the arrival feel earned rather than selected.
Status
The one-step-at-a-time approach to volume setting has been observed in eleven of eleven sessions this quarter. It is not a new behavior. It is not a response to a specific deficiency in the interface.
Correcting speaker volume staircase requires more authority than repeating it. The slider is there. Nobody reaches for it.
Next steps: None identified. Findings noted for the record.
