Background
In the first year of working from home, meetings were treated as private events. The bedroom door was closed. The family was informed. Disruptions were infrequent and addressed individually.
In the second year, the household has developed ambient awareness of meeting schedules without requiring explicit communication. The signal is a closed door, which in the pre-2020 interpretation meant privacy and in the 2021 interpretation means a Zoom call, which is a different kind of privacy.
Current Procedure
A door is closed. This communicates: a meeting is in progress, audio should not be produced within range of the meeting, and the person behind the door is performing professional competence for an audience that cannot see the room behind them.
The procedure does not require verbal communication. It does not require a calendar consultation. It requires only the presence of a closed door and the shared understanding that a closed door during working hours means something different than a closed door during non-working hours, a distinction that has required approximately ten months to establish.
Observed Behaviors
The household adjusts delivery of information based on door status. Urgent matters are relayed via phone message to a device that is silenced during meetings. Non-urgent matters are stored for end-of-meeting delivery. Truly non-urgent matters are forgotten entirely, which is an acceptable outcome.
A child under twelve is the exception. The child has learned that a closed door means meeting, and that meeting means the door can be opened quietly after a suitable interval if the need is sufficient, and that the threshold for "sufficient" is negotiated on a per-instance basis in a process that takes longer than the original need.
Finding
The household has developed meeting awareness without meeting access, which is the same arrangement most offices operated on and nobody described as a problem.
The person on the other side of the video call cannot see the closed door. They receive only the portion of the household that the background frame permits, which by year two has been optimized to show a wall, a bookshelf, or a virtual background depicting an environment that does not exist.
Secondary Finding
The door closing signal has acquired an inverse: a door left open during working hours now communicates availability in a way it did not before March 2020. This was not designed. It emerged.
Current Status
The procedure is in use. It is working within acceptable parameters. One child continues to operate outside the protocol. This is noted.
