Progress Report on Professional Small Talk

Reporting Period: This Week Subject: Small Talk Performance Metric: Time Allocation Before Agenda Item One

Monday Call Review

9:03 AM — Call connected. Both parties confirmed presence with tone of mild surprise that the call had connected.

9:03–9:04 — Weather. Mumbai was hot. London was cold. Both parties expressed appropriate reactions to information they already possessed.

9:04–9:05 — Weekend. One party had a low-key one. One party had a good one. Neither party elaborated. Neither party was expected to.

9:05 — Transition phrase. "Anyway." Agenda Item One begins.

Total small-talk duration: Two minutes. Information exchanged: None that was not already available. Function served: Confirmed that both parties are prepared to be professional with each other for the next forty-five minutes.

Efficiency Note

The coworker who joins calls on time has developed a protocol that compresses the entire Monday small-talk sequence to approximately thirty seconds. They do this without appearing abrupt by deploying the weather segment with genuine engagement and transitioning to the weekend segment before it expires.

This protocol has been observed and admired. It has not been copied because copying it would require acknowledging it consciously, and conscious small talk is worse than procedural small talk.

The Formalization Problem

The second Monday on which small talk ran to three minutes produced a template. The template contains approved topics and a recommended duration.

The template was created to improve small-talk efficiency. The template is now discussed in onboarding for new team members.

Small talk has a template. The template produces follow-up conversations about whether the template is working. The follow-up conversations are themselves a form of small talk.

Its uselessness as a productivity tool has become evidence that it needs more structure.

Small talk exists. Small talk will continue to exist. The purpose is not weather information. The purpose is the two minutes before both parties commit to being professional.
